English and computer classes for adults

Summer English classes in the Canal:

Canal Alliance -- Canal Alliance’s summer ESL program starts on June 1. (It is still possible to register after the first day.) Classes are offered six days per week and at different hours. To register, come to Canal Alliance (91 Larkspur Street) Monday to Friday, 9:00 to 5:00. La Puerta -- Classes in 3 levels, every Friday at 7:00 in Pickleweed Park. There is no advance registration; simply go the class and speak directly with the teacher. Free.

Conservation Corps North Bay -- There is are a basic-level class on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., and a level 2/level 3 class on Mondays and Wednesdays from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Classes are at 27 Larkspur Street, on the corner of Kerner Blvd. If you have not studied at the College of Marin in the last 2 years, it is required to take a test before entering the class. For more information, call 485-9642. Classes are free, and begin on June 15. Offered by the College of Marin.

Study English using computers -- At 27 Larkspur Street, on the corner of Kerner Blvd. Mondays and Tuesdays from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 and 5:30-7:30 p.m., starting on June 15. There is no advance registration; simply go at those times and speak directly with the teacher. Free. Offered by College of Marin.

Programs for parents and kids

 

Coffee Talk at Bahia Vista School: This month's topic is “Emergency preparedness.” In the multi-use room. Wednesday, June 3 from 8:15 to 9:30 a.m. Open to the public.

Celebrate the artistic achievements of students in the MYC's middle school program: Join this year-end celebration on Friday, June 5 from 5:00 to 7:00. At the Marin Youth Center, 1115 Third Street.

Fiesta of the Sun at Laurel Dell School: All families are welcome. There will be games, food, music, performances, a yard sale, and a water slide. Saturday, June 6 at Laurel Dell School, 225 Woodland Avenue.

"Gran Kermes" family celebration: The goal of this event is to raise funds for Bahia Vista School. Live music, raffle, jumper, international food, and more. At Bahia Vista School (125 Bahia Way), Saturday, June 13 from 10:00 to 3:00. For more information, call Roberto Hernandez at 453-1467.

Digital photography program for kids 10-13 years old: This 6-week program, on Thursdays from 3:30 to 5:00, starts on June 18 at the Canal Welcome Center (141 Alto Street). Participants will learn to use digital cameras (provided), and their work will be shown in an exhibit at the end of the program. Registration is limited. 10th annual fatherhood picnic: Food, games, and live entertainment -- all completely free. Saturday, June 20 from 12:00 to 4:00 in Marin City. A free bus to the event will leave from Pickleweed Park at 11:00. You must bring a role model to the event; a male role model is encouraged, but not required.

Intensive English for students (from other countries) entering grades 6, 7 and 8 -- Monday to Friday, 1:30 to 5:30.

Program for students entering grade 9 -- Preparation for high school -- Monday to Friday, 1:30 to 5:30.

Leadership program for students entering grades 10, 11 and 12 -- Development of writing skills and social events -- Monday to Friday, 1:30 to 5:30.

Program for students entering university -- Preparation for college life -- Twice a week, times to be determined.

Program for continuing college students -- Exploration of work skills, preparation for the next semester, and help with summer classes -- Twice a week, times to be determined.

 

Soccer and cheerleading camp for boys and girls ages 6-11: June 15-19, 3:30-6:45 at Bahia Vista School (125 Bahia Way). The cost is $10 for the week. Includes training, snacks, and daily bible study. For more information, call Marian Engelland at 458-2935

For teenagers

 

Summer job for youth ages 15-22: Visit local homes and equip them to save electricity. For more information, call 510-665-1501 ext. 10. Since 2000, Rising Sun Energy Center has trained and employed over 400 young people, and has conducted over 9,000 "green house calls" around the Bay Area.

Youth employment training program (for ages 14-21): Job matching and employment assistance in the county building at 120 North Redwood Drive, San Rafael. For more information, call Janis Reynolds at 473-3343.

Learn to fix bikes and earn one of your own: A job training center for low-income youth through age 17. Summer hours: Tuesday to Saturday 12:00-6:00. Free. 125 Larkspur Street #119, San Rafael. Call 455-8876 for more information.

CD release party -- "Many Thoughts, One MYC": The artist on this compilation CD will perform on Saturday, June 13 at 9:00. At the Marin Youth Center, 1115 Third Street.

Event for youth ages 16-25 in need of housing, jobs, clothes, legal help, help with credit, or dental/health care: Come to "Youth Connect" on Wednesday, June 17 from 4:00 to 8:00. Seeking volunteers for the event: If you are an adult and would like to help serve homeless and at-risk youth, call 381-7173.

Youth leadership and youth alcohol and drug prevention councils: Increase your leadership skills and have fun, while working with other teens to improve your community. Join one of the Youth Leadership Institute's youth councils, earn a stipend and volunteer/community service hours and make your neighborhood a better place for youth. Open to ages 12-23.
