When Nancy Rosa retired from Canal Alliance in February 2007, she asked that we establish a Nancy Rosa Scholarship Fund. This school year we have been able to distribute $15,000 in support for tuition and book expenses, as well as work study opportunities at Canal Alliance to the highly motivated young people in our college program.
I came here when I was 13 years old. I left my family, my school and my friends. It was really hard in the beginning. The language, people, and even the food were not the same. I felt like I wasn’t supposed to be here.
My only goal was to learn English. I never thought about going to college. After a couple years, I started thinking that I wanted to keep studying so I began working harder. I am now a senior and I am 100% sure that I am going to college.
One of the biggest challenges I expect is the costs of college. Since a young age, I have worked to help support my family. I have proven that I am able to do both – school and work. However, I know the expenses of a college education are more than my family and I am able to afford. Even though I am not exactly sure of what I want to be when I grow up, I know that earning an education is the best chance that I have to not only better myself but also help my family and community
Our goal for is to grow the Nancy Rosa Scholarship Fund by $20,000 or more between now and June 1, 2008. This will allow us to help meet both current needs and to increase the amount of the fund.
