We offer a variety of ESL
programming to meet the community's range of needs. Our courses include:
Basic Survival English, Beginning, Advanced Beginning, Intermediate, and
Advanced. Students can choose to attend classes during mornings or evenings,
and they can also choose to attend one or two days per week. We offer classes
year-round, with new 16-week sessions beginning each Spring, Summer, and
Fall. Classes are held on site at our Canal Alliance facility. Some students request special assistance
to learn English. Some are preparing for citizenship or studying to earn
a GED. Others have work schedules that conflict with our class times, or
have no childcare options. Still others come to us for extra help in a one-on-one
setting. For 100 of these students, we offer in-home, one-on-one tutoring.
A team of 42 volunteers teaches all of our classes, and 100 volunteers serve
as in-home tutors. These volunteers are both talented and dedicated; many
are former teachers and several have taken classes at local universities
to earn ESL credentials.
Canal Alliance also offers a new way to learn English: in our computer lab.
Students in our morning classes spend one hour per week in the computer
lab, using award-winning Rosetta Stone software. For many students, this
is a first opportunity to work with a computer - so Rosetta Stone has the
added benefit of helping students build computer experience and confidence
as they learn to speak.
