Volunteer of the Month January 2010

Joe Goldman

“He is a volunteer that is able to understand our youth. He is a teacher, a mentor, but most importantly, an ally for our community,” states Sheila Torres, YEDP Director.

Raquel Saunders, YEDP Staff, agrees, “Joe is, without a doubt, our most dedicated and cherished volunteer in the youth program. ‘Joe Momma’, as the students endearingly have nicknamed him, is much more than a volunteer, he has become an amazing mentor and friend to students and staff alike”.

“Volunteer work is a matter of finding the right fit between the volunteer and the charitable organization,” declares Joe. “Like all relations, it doesn't always work.  In my case, the relationship was perfect.  Having experienced volunteer work in many organizations, I can say first hand that I have never felt more challenged or more appreciated in any of my experiences. First and foremost, the organization is well run and supportive.  The volunteer receives one message from responsible parties and can feel confident that the volunteer apparatus runs smoothly.  Second, it is obvious that the staff appreciates the volunteers' time and has enforced that feeling with the kids as well.  Third, the children in the middle school and high school programs show respect and are eager for help.  It is a constant challenge keeping classroom decorum commensurate with a learning environment.”

“However, these kids have been cooped up in classrooms all day and need to work off some of their energy.  They are constantly curious about almost anything.  This provides constant opportunities for what I call learning moments.  We can branch off topic onto all kinds of subjects giving a taste of American cultural literacy.  I am most fulfilled when I can help with homework, but I have to admit, it is the less structured times that provide opportunities for learning.  What I find most lacking in the education of these kids is the quiet time when some adult reads to them.  It doesn't happen at home or at school.  It's a one on one experience that successful children cherish as a matter of course.  On occasion, time permitting, it is very rewarding to sit with a kid and just read.  For them, they hear the English language spoken and begin to understand how to read with inflection and understanding.  Lastly, working with these specific kids has given them and myself, hope for the future.  I constantly emphasize the importance of education and study and the enjoyment of college life.  Occasionally I think we get through to them!”

Joe was presented with a certificate and a complimentary dessert from the Tiburon Grill.
