Canal Alliance Launches Leadership Academy Designed to Expand Latinx Advocacy

January 4, 2024

In June 2023, Canal Alliance was thrilled to receive a $250,000 grant from the San Francisco Foundation that made us part of a dynamic cohort of ten organizations that share the same core commitment: to build the power of Latinx communities throughout the Bay Area.

The cohort consists of nonprofit organizations that are working together to advocate for a range of Latinx issues across five Bay Area counties including San Francisco, Contra Costa, Alameda, San Mateo, and Marin.

As Marin County’s sole cohort member, this grant has already strengthened Canal Alliance’s Canal Alliance Policy and Civic Engagement (PACE) program. PACE is centered around five key initiatives that seek to expand affordable housing, improve transportation equity, mitigate sea-level rise, and increase voter participation. During 2023, the Canal Alliance PACE team engaged 761 residents to advocate on issues that impact the Canal neighborhood they call home.

As part of its early efforts within the cohort, Canal Alliance is now launching a Leadership Academy that will provide local community members and volunteers with the training needed to strengthen their advocacy skills and inspire them to become civic leaders.
