Digital Divide in the Canal

COVID-19 and shelter-in-place orders have exacerbated many issues facing Latino immigrants in San Rafael’s Canal neighborhood. One issue that has long existed but is much more visible as a result of the pandemic is the lack of digital access in the Canal. Now thousands of students in the Canal are required to participate in distance learning, yet many have limited access.

COVID-19 Disparities in Marin County

With more than 50,000 people testing positive for COVID-19 in the Bay Area, 2,649 of these cases have occurred in Marin County and over half of them in the densely populated Canal neighborhood. The Canal’s 20% positivity rate is triple that of the rest of Marin.

Nearly 80% of Marin County COVID-19 cases are Latino

Latinos make up 16% of Marin County’s population, yet currently account for nearly 80% of the county’s coronavirus cases. It’s the largest racial disparity of any county in the Bay Area, and part of the reason the county has landed on the state’s watch list.

San Rafael Educators Donate Stimulus Money to Support Immigrant Families

Canal Alliance is grateful to the San Rafael Teachers Association (SRTA), who, inspired by other school districts in the area, are encouraging the San Rafael City Schools community to donate a portion of their stimulus checks to local immigrant families. The SRTA chose to launch this campaign because they recognize that immigrant families in their district face particularly difficult circumstances in the wake of COVID-19 and the shelter in place order.
