Canal Alliance is intensifying its efforts to provide affordable housing and advocate for tenants’ rights in Marin County, recognizing affordable housing as a crucial lever for supporting families working to pull themselves poverty and build stable lives. As part of this effort, Canal Alliance plans to acquire 100 housing units in the Canal by 2028.

Canal Alliance’s work in the housing space began with an Affordable Housing Landscape Feasibility Study to understand housing, climate change, and displacement challenges in the Canal neighborhood faces. Partnering with Nonprofit Finance Fund and Street Level Advisors, Canal Alliance conducted research, interviews, and a real estate landscape analysis.

In October 2024, Canal Alliance purchased a 9-unit building, increasing our total affordable rental portfolio to 21 units. The purchase of 1400 Lincoln Avenue is an important step toward growing the housing program and supporting the community and neighborhood.

This work is made possible in part by generous funding from The National Association for Latino Community Asset Builders (NALCAB), an agency that will continue to assist Canal Alliance staff with bilingual outreach to the community and application assistance for an approved 80-unit Habitat for Humanity project in nearby Novato.

* The National Association for Latino Community Asset Builders (NALCAB) is the hub of a national network of 200+ member organizations that are anchor institutions in geographically and ethnically diverse Latino communities in 46 states, Washington DC, and Puerto Rico. NALCAB supports its member institutions through funding, training, research, and advocacy, enabling them to invest in their communities by building affordable housing, ensuring equitable neighborhood development, and much more.
