Career Education: Updates
June 5, 2019
Last year Canal Alliance launched it’s Career Education Program with the announcement of a strategic partnership with Marin Builders Association, College of Marin and CareerPoint Marin. This partnership was created to provide motivated immigrants in our community with the training and connections needed to secure well-paying careers in the high-demand construction industry.
Over the last ten weeks, our second cohort of students completed 50 hours of course work in theoretical and hands-on learning environments to obtain certificates in Basic Construction Skills from College of Marin. Graduating students also received interview training, financial literacy tools and resume building skills thanks to our partnership with CareerPoint Marin. All were well-prepared to meet with potential employers in search of skilled employees.
On June 4th, our partners at Marin Builders Association hosted a hiring fair for the graduates of the program’s second cohort. Representatives from 9 local companies interviewed students whom they described as “enthusiastic,” “motivated,” “friendly,” and “high-skilled.”
“Every student walked away with at least one potential job opportunity, and one employer said he would be happy to have any of our students represent his company,” says Gloria Estavillo, Director of Education and Career at Canal Alliance. “We are very proud of the work that our students have done to prepare for this event and we are grateful for the partnerships we’ve created that made this possible.”
