March 2020 Newsletter
March 6, 2020
In honor of International Women’s Day on March 8th, Canal Alliance is elevating the stories and perspectives of the powerful and inspiring women in our community. From policy to education, and advocacy to community policing, Latinas are changing the face of leadership in Marin County:
Monica Cañas, a Trustee on the Larkspur Corte Madera School Board who is showing Latino families that they have a place in deciding the future of their communities.
Anna Pletcher, a partner at O’Melveny & Myers and former candidate for Marin County District Attorney who shares her thoughts on ambition and justice.
Officers Lorena Vega and Jessica Trujillo with San Rafael Police Department who are paving new paths for women in community policing.
And Air Gallegos, Canal Alliance’s Director of Education and Career who is working everyday to create educational equity in our communities.
Gracias to all of the Latina leaders who are blazing new trails and empowering our next generation of leaders!
Why I Give: Donor Highlight “We believe in the work that the Canal Alliance does to support our community in San Rafael. My husband and I are proud to be a small part of the Canal Alliance family.” – D.C.
Volunteer Feature: Alex Dubin When Alex Dubin volunteered at Canal Alliance he helped with asylum applications and served as an aide in our ESL program where he learned that he had a passion for working with immigrant communities.
So when he graduated from Tulane University, his mother, Laurie, dedicated his celebration to Canal Alliance and raised nearly $1,000 in honor of Alex’s accomplishments.
“[Alex] got so much out of working at Canal Alliance,” says Laurie. “It exposed him to a slice of Marin that not enough of us see. He got to know immigrants and hear their stories – about the circumstances that led them to leave their countries and the struggles they face here in the US. It led to friendships that he maintains to this day. It’s one thing to read the news or see hardworking Central Americans around Marin – its another thing to get to know them personally the way Alex has. It inspired him to learn Spanish and be as fluent as possible and led to his college double major in Latin American Studies and Spanish.”
After graduation, Alex completed his ESL certification program from Tulane and lived in Mexico City teaching English in a local elementary school. He’s now on a National Outdoor Leadership School program in Chile & Patagonia.
GRACIAS to Alex for all the work that he has done with Canal Alliance and to the Dubin family for their support of our mission and the community!
